Immediate allocation policy allocates the resources if available, otherwise the request is rejected. Best-effort policy also allocates the requested resources if available otherwise the request is placed in a FIFO queue. It is not possible for a cloud provider to satisfy all the requests due to finite resources at a time. Haizea is a resource lease manager that tries to address these issues by introducing complex resource allocation policies. Haizea uses resource leases as resource allocation abstraction and implements these leases by allocating Virtual Machines (VMs). Haizea supports four kinds of resource allocation policies: immediate, best effort, advanced reservation and deadline sensitive. This work provides a better way to support deadline sensitive leases in Haizea while minimizing the total number of leases rejected by it. Proposed dynamic planning based scheduling algorithm is implemented in Haizea that can admit new leases and prepare the schedule whenever a new lease can be accommodated. Experiments results show that it maximizes resource utilization and acceptance of leases compared to the existing algorithm of Haizea.Publication Metadata only A theoretical framework for rural knowledge centers(01-01-2011) Guntaku, Dileepkumar; Holz-Clause, M; Sai, K Aruna; Chaudhary, Sanjay; Balaji, V; DA-IICT, GandhinagarExponential growth in ICTs (Information and Communication Technologies) and establishment of RKCs (Rural Knowledge Centers) have been fast spreading across the globe. In the continuous process, there are tens of thousands of RKCs are being established by various agencies, to provide shared public access to ICTs for meeting educational, social, personal, economic and entertainment needs of the rural community. As most of these initiatives are relatively new, there are mixed opinions on the social and economic impacts of RKCs. There is also lack of good understanding on the conceptual and theoretical framework for planning and designing of RKCs. The authors conducted a study to fill this information gap by assessing selected ICT4D (ICT for development) project sites in rural India. Through the systemic analysis of the data and continuous interpretation of the observations, the study proposes a framework for planning and designing of RKCs. In this paper, the authors present the study results, and discuss the evolution process of RKCs and factors that influences planning and designing of RKCs.Publication Metadata only Performance analysis of information services in computational grids(01-08-2007) Purohit, S; Chaudhary, Sanjay; DA-IICT, GandhinagarThe primary objective of a Grid Information Service is to discover resources out of large number of grid nodes. While deploying a grid, it is a challenging task for the grid administrator to opt for the GIS which discovers resources within acceptable time period. This work aims at analyzing the behavior and performance of two most widely deployed GIS viz. Monitoring and Discovery Services (MDS) and Distributed Hash Tables (DHT). A quantitative comparative analysis of the two schemes has been performed. Experiments have been designed and performed with GridSim [1], to understand the behavior of the two services in presence of large number of users and resources. Four experiments are conducted, scalability of the two schemes has been studied, and the parameters that form bottlenecks in the behavior of these two schemes, have been identified. Limiting bounds have been established over various parameters identified. These parameters are number of users an index server can support, number of information providers, response time and throughput of the index server .Finally the results obtained establish that DHT index server scales better and provide higher throughput as compared to MDS index server. The results provide an aid in deploying information services in a Grid and help in future development work.
